What you see is NOT always what you get

When you order your dream dress online, what you receive may not be the same quality or finish as the beautiful picture that you see on the website.

Many of the bridal gowns that come to me for alterations indicate a level of unskilled pattern making or inferior construction. While the overall look of the gown looks good it is only a trained eye that would spot the problems, that may arise once the seams are opened up.

Here are some examples of what I have encountered.

Sleeveless style bodices (as opposed to strapless) are very much in vogue, with appliqued sheer lace extending up onto the shoulder line and curving down into a sexy low back.

It is important to make sure that the armhole is rounded off into a natural oval shape at the armpit. It should not cut across your underarm. Notice the shape of the armhole in the picture. It would almost certainly have caused tightness under the armpits.

In this particular case the only solution was to remodel the top part of the lace bodice and replace with fairly wide lace straps.

I always start with a sketch to visualise how I see the gown could look with some clever alterations.  In this case I wanted to show how the armhole could look and fit under the arm.  I then got to work on creating the finished product, giving my bride the perfect fit she was looking for.

Think about sleeves too, long or short, they need to be set into the correctly sized armhole. This shows the importance of the armhole again. A tight armhole will cause a tight sleeve!

This example shows exactly that. My bride could not even get her arms into sleeves of this dress and it required some careful redesign and alteration to give her the comfort and “fitted to flatter” feeling

So think carefully about where you may choose to buy your dream dress.  The ultimate cost for wrongly cut sleeveless styles, will certainly need to include major alterations to reshape armholes and re-adjust the surrounding features affected by the adjustment.
