Savaging the Rules of Design

Last year I had the opportunity of going to Alexander McQueen’s Savage Beauty exhibition in London, dramatically displayed in a magnificent hall at the Victoria and Albert museum, the world’s leading museum of art and design.

McQueen was born in London in 1969 and became the head of the Louis Vuitton owned Givenchy range in 1996.  He later started his own range and won the British Designer of the Year four times.

I must admit that my research on 20th century designers brought me to the conclusion that Alexander McQueen was too “out-of-the-box” for my conservative fashion style. Or perhaps I was influenced by his own statement; “I’m a romantic schizophrenic”

However stepping into the world of this eccentric, avant garde genius I found myself being mesmerised by the dark but dazzling imaginations of his designs, which evoked sensations of shock and awe. Definitely not fashion for the faint-hearted.

In 2010 the fashion world lost a rare designer who fearlessly challenged the conventions of fashion. It was certainly a rare experience to see his work on display.
