From Hollywood to Royalty…Lace Never Goes Out of Style

It seems that lace has never been more popular, and it could be the Duchess of Cambridge to thank for the surge in popularity.

As I browsed through the fashion stores recently it was clear that “Lace” is trending for every style and budget.  There are full lace skirts, or a combination of lace and fabric dresses and tops, or jackets with lace sleeves, and in a variety of colours.

A catalyst for the resurgence of lace came after the royal wedding of Kate Middleton in 2011 when she  won the hearts of many brides-to-be, wearing a dress that was clearly inspired by that worn by Hollywood icon Grace Kelly for her wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956.

With the wedding season approaching I have noticed more and more alterations involving lace. It is a major trend this season as many brides are choosing  to have lace incorporated into their bridal gowns.  Lace could adorn the bodice, or give a romantic feel to a full gown.  Beaded lace motifs are often scattered onto a fairytale skirt and finished with a scalloped lace-edged hem.  A train in lace looks stunning as the bride glides up the aisle.

When doing bridal alterations involving lace you can’t take short cuts.  When it comes to taking in the side seams, pulling in over the bust  or taking up a  lace edged hem there is no easy way to alter lace. It needs to be unpicked over the area of the seam and then re-applied with invisible stitches after the seam has been adjusted.  Often there are beads, crystals or diamantes to hand sew onto the lace.  Lace hems have to be accurately lifted to flow  two  centimeters over the under skirt.
