A Stitch in Time…

When deciding on dresses for your bridesmaids consider the quality as well as the cost.

While many bridesmaids suppliers offer some colourful and pleasant designs, it is what is underneath that will be the difference between a bridal gown that can be fitted to flatter and one that will cost more than it is worth to alter.

The onus on adjusting a bridal dress falls into the hands of an alterations expert like myself and the extent of the job at hand is sometimes not revealed until you start looking inside.

On many occasions when I open up the seams to get into the dress I am stunned at the flawed and untidy state of the inside seams.  It would be easy to just do the alteration ignoring all the flaws on the inside of the dress, but as a professional seamstress maintaining the highest levels of service for my clients I always do the job properly and tidy up, so the finished look is at its best.  Here is an example of what I mean:

So often I am really reluctant to take on bridesmaids because while the request may be;

“only take it in over the bust” or “just take up the hem”,

the time taken to do those small alterations does not match the cost of fixing up the manufacturer’s mass produced garments, done with cheap labour so accessible at some of these foreign factories.  The cost of the alterations needed can make the real cost of the bridesmaid dress a lot more than you budgeted for.

So my advice is to think carefully about your purchases and consider the real cost of having the necessary bridal alterations done, so your bridesmaids can look just as beautiful as you on your big day.
